A yard ramp provides a practical dock-to-ground bridge, allowing forklifts to safely move pallets, equipment, and freight between the trailer and the ground.

Step-by-Step: How To Unload a Semi-Truck With a Yard Ramp

Step 1

Move the yard ramp into position

Start by moving the ramp into the unloading area. If you do not keep the ramp permanently in place, attach it to the forklift using the chain and lift point, then move it where you need it. This keeps the ramp out of the way when not in use and helps conserve yard space.

Tip: Give yourself enough room for the trailer to back straight into the ramp.

Step 2

Set the platform height

Once the ramp is in position, estimate the height needed for the trailer or container you are unloading. Different trailers sit at different heights, so this may vary from load to load. Get close first, then fine-tune it in the next steps.

Step 3

Drop the support jacks

Lower the support jacks to match the height you need. Make sure all required support points are engaged so the ramp is properly stabilized before use.

Important: Drop all five jacks—the three in the front and the two in the middle.

Step 4

Fine-tune the height with the hand crank

Use the hand crank to make the finishing adjustments so the front support points are firmly contacting the ground and the platform is aligned correctly for the trailer height.
